// Colorado Trail Explorer

The Colorado Trail Explorer is a key component of Governor John Hickenlooper’s Colorado the Beautiful program, it markets the Colorado’s outdoor recreation infrastructure and is designed to work on both desktop and smartphone. The new map features more than 39,000 miles of trails and over 1,400 trailheads. There are 6,821 miles of mountain bike trails and 5,683 miles of hiking trails.

// Canada’s ‘Discovery Pass’

In honor the nation’s 150th birthday next July, Canada announced the Discovery Pass. Canada has 47 national parks and it’s making access to all of them for free for 365 days. The pass doesn’t just cover national parks. The free admission extends to the Maple Leaf’s 171 National Marine Conservation Areas and National Historic Sites.

// Google Imagery updated

The previous iteration of Google Earth was powered by images from the Landsat 7, which was launched way back in 1999 and photographed the earth with a pixel size of 30 meters. That satellite suffered a hardware failure in 2003, resulting in large diagonal gaps of missing data in the imagery it produced. Now we’re seeing images from Landsat 8, which was launched in 2013, and has a pixel size of 15 meters, in addition to other improved capabilities.

// U.S. Forest Service Topographical Maps Releases Geo-enabled PDFs

The U.S. Forest Service has released (Free) maps in several formats, most importantly Geo-enabled PDFs! U.S. Forest Service Topo maps are 7.5 minute, 1:24,000-scale over the conterminous United States, and 15 minute X 20-22.5 minute, 1:63,360-scale over Alaska. These maps are available in several formats on fs.usda.gov

The map includes the National Park Service (NPS) Natural Earth physical map at 1.24km per pixel for the world at small scales, i-cubed eTOPO 1:250,000-scale maps for the contiguous United States at medium scales, and National Geographic TOPO! 1:100,000 and 1:24,000-scale maps (1:250,000 and 1:63,000 in Alaska) for the United States at large scales. New trails can be logged in the field and uploaded to OHVtrails.net for sharing.
